Drive Life : April 30th 2010
1HERSA1 0007 The Sydney Morning Herald April 30, 2010 Drive Life 7 WHIPPED-UP CONTROVERSY Mini is a brand built around being a bit different. Since the relaunch of the brand in 2001 it has used all manner of creative and offbeat methods to advertise the compact car. And its latest offering is no different. The company's new billboard in Hamburg uses the slogan ''A good Mini takes you to heaven. A bad Mini takes you everywhere.'' The billboard shows the rear endofaredMiniwitha mechanically operated S&M whip, steadily giving the back of the car a whack. It's just the latest in a long line of racy stunts and ads from Mini. In 2008 the company had sexy lingerie brand Agent Provocateur design a ''burlesque bedroom on wheels''. WINADATE WITH STIG Good news: you can win an invitation to a track day with Top Gear's enigmatic racing driver, the Stig. Bad news: you have to be British. Nissan UK and the team at Top Gear are offering 20 individuals the chance to drive with the Stig. The TV show's famous mystery racing driver will guide them around a Surrey racetrack in Nissan's 370Z coupe. The magazine is also giving four readers the chance to test-drive the 370Z for a fortnight and write a road testfortheTopGear magazine. The real winners will be the magazine's journalists, who have someone else to write the road test. Clever chaps! GAME FOR THE CHALLENGE Who said playing computer games is a waste of time? Not Jordan Tresson, an automotive engineering student, who has been crowned the winner of the 2010 GT Academy and earned a drive in this year's FIA GT4 sports car championship. The GT Academy is a competition run by PlayStation and Nissan to see how gaming skills in Gran Turismo transfer into the real racing world. Tresson, a 21-year-old Frenchman, beat applicants from 18 countries, including Australia, and endured a five- day boot camp at Britain's Silverstone circuit to make last week's two-driver final. The ultimate challenge to decide the winner was a five- lap shootout between Tresson and Italian Luca Lorenzini driving the GT4-spec Nissan 370Z. Tresson will now trade his PlayStation for the 370Z racer and will partner professional driver Alex Buncombe in the six-round FIA GT4 European Cup. Last year's GT Academy winner finished second in the championship. SUPERCAR OF THE SEAS BMW isn't the only car company diversifying. Budding designer Mauro Lecchi has created the concept for a Lamborghini Yacht, a sea-going supercar. Using the Lamborghini Reventon as his starting point, Lecchi has designed a black, striking power- yacht. The Reventon's side- mounted air intakes were used as inspiration for the large windows on the side of the boat to give it an unmistakeable Lambo look. In keeping with Lamborghini's luxury reputation, the yacht is equipped with an aft deck with double lounge and bar and a protected foredeck. Inside there is a master bedroom and guest room. Lecchi has come up with three possible engine combinations for the yacht: either two 950 horsepower (708kW) Seatek diesels, two 700 horsepower (521kW) Volvo diesels or three Lamborghini V12 powerplants. Unfortunately for lovers of Lamborghinis and yachting, the boat remains strictly a concept at this stage.
