Helen Pitt delves into the kaleidoscope of new-age hues for answers. Do red cars really go faster, get more speeding tickets and cost more to insure? When it comes to choosing the colour of a new car, are we a nation of fashion-conscious trend-followers? Or do we choose the colours that are safest on our roads? These questions have confounded car companies, including those that gathered in Detroit in October, wanting to spot or anoint the ''next big thing'' in car colour predictions. At the launch of the new palette in development for the automotive market, an array of exotic new hues joined traditional favourites. At the car trade equivalent of the Paris catwalks, global paint manufacturer PPG Industries unveiled denim blue, cognac brown and wicked (a sinister green inspired by couture fashion). The company's colour styling manager, Jane Harrington, says: ''Colour is an important component of how today's car maker can define and differentiate a vehicle or brand in the marketplace.'' Sports car brands have known this since 1928, when they first coined the phrase ''British racing green'' to cover the spectrum of greens (Brunswick, forest, hunter and moss) and adopted them as semi-official shades for the first Monaco Grand Prix. Even today when companies such as Audi proclaim ''brown is the new white'' -- as they did with the recently launched Audi R8 Spyder's Ipanema brown -- they attempt to start trends by mirroring colours in glossy fashion mags. Just peruse any new car showroom and you'll note a number of tantalising tones sound more like a lipstick catalogue (Toyota's wildfire red) than a paint swatch for vehicles. Yet the world's car owners, it seems, are a conservative bunch. For the 10th consecutive year, silver has ranked as the most popular vehicle colour in the world, according to PPG. In fact, silver's popularity is at its highest since 1990, when the data was first recorded. The 57th DuPont Global Automotive Colour Popularity Report, released last December, shows a similar trend worldwide; silver, black and white are the top- three car colours. Fashion shades, on the other hand, rank poorly. According to the company's stats in the Asia-Pacific region, only green (which charted a lowly 1 per cent) was less popular than new niche colours (which account for 4 per cent of trade, according to PPG).
