The fuel gauge in my car, which is under warranty, is unreliable but the dealer brushes off the problem, saying it reads differently depending on where the car is parked. Is this correct? Also, is it better to leave the fuel tank full or empty when it will not be used for a long time? Sidney Fuel readings can vary when a car has been parked on a steep hill or angle. When the car is restarted on a new ignition cycle, the fuel gauge system might think the car has more or less fuel in it because it's parked on a steep angle (the fuel is all to one side of the tank), making the gauge read differently to when the car was last running, but this sorts itself out after a kilometre or two of driving. In your case, take your complaint to another dealer or, alternatively, call the customer assistance centre of your manufacturer and lodge a complaint. Your problem will be followed through with a dealer until the fault is fixed and this is worthwhile doing in case the problem resurfaces after the vehicle is out of warranty. As for fuel, it's best to leave as little as possible in the tank if you are going away or storing the car because fuel starts to deteriorate as early as four weeks. Some fuel stabiliser will prolong the life of the fuel and stop any varnish build-up. I have recently bought a second- hand Mercedes CLK 320 convertible with Roadstone 225/40ZR18 N7000 tyres fitted front and rear on 18-inch Mercedes rims. These tyres are marked ''50 max. psi''. I use the vehicle as a second car on relaxed, top-down Sunday drives. I contacted the tyre importer who advised to run 45 psi front and rear, which seems very high to me. What pressure should I run in these tyres? Ian This does sound odd. It's always best to follow the manufacturer's pressure recommendations on the tyre plaque fitted to the vehicle when the car is equipped with OE (original equipment) tyres. However, as a vehicle gets older, the OE tyres might no longer be available or you might choose a different tyre brand. In this case, it's always best to contact the tyre manufacturer and check what pressure is recommended for that model and size of tyre when it's used on your car. This is important because it will affect your car's handling, braking, ride and tyre wear, not to mention fuel economy. All tyres are made differently, so pressure recommendations from, for example, Bridgestone, for a 225/40/18 might vary even between different Bridgestone tyres of the same size. They will definitely be different to a Goodyear or, in your case, a Roadstone. JARGON BUSTER MONOCOQUE CHASSIS CARS used to have two distinct parts: a frame, or chassis, that contained the suspension, engine and driveshaft, plus a separate body with all the panel work that was bolted onto the chassis. Every car and most SUVs (except for a few hardcore offroaders and work utes) now have a monocoque chassis, which is a single frame with mechanical components bolted directly underneath.
